LED lighting upgrades would provide a significant return on investment and save Londoners money. A complete conversion to LED lighting from outdated fluorescent or incandescent bulbs can result in annual energy savings of 50-80%. That's a significant savings throughout the entire network.
When used frequently, such as in an underground carriage, an incandescent bulb may need to be replaced every three months - around 1000 hours before it burns out. An LED bulb can last up to 50,000 hours, or ten years.
LED lights are more efficient not only in terms of energy use, but also in terms of how they apply and spread light. Using the light more effectively in a relatively small underground vehicle will reduce costs and waste.
Traveling on the Tube on a humid and stuffy summer day is a miserable experience made worse by heat-emitting light systems. Up to 90% of the energy produced by some older light bulbs is heat rather than light, which is inefficient and dangerous. LED lights are both safe and pleasant to the touch.
LED lights require less metal, less or no glass, and no harmful compounds, such as the mercury used in fluorescent bulb coils. As a result, they are less expensive to produce and easier to recycle.
A typical LED bulb consumes only 5 watts of electricity, which is ten times less than the average 50 watts consumed by a normal halogen lamp. In an era of energy-saving measures, which the Mayor rightfully supports, reducing waste must be a top concern.
As previously established, the advantages of LED lighting are extensive and far-reaching. To be honest, there are no compelling reasons not to upgrade.
We made a public offer to Sadiq Khan to provide the required renovations at no expense. We've put LED lighting in many of London's most iconic locations, like Lincoln's Inn and Whittington House, and now we'd want to add the legendary London Underground to the list.
The Mayor has our offer, and we're willing to be flexible in terms of delivery/installation if he only calls.
