LED downlights: Should you replace them?

October 27, 2023

In the past few years, LED lighting technology has developed at an alarming rate. A few years ago, products that were considered cutting edge were replaced by products that were better in every way. Recessed downlights can be used for residential and professional purposes and are a stylish and understated alternative to traditional incandescent lamps. If you haven't yet upgraded to integrated LED embedded spotlights, read on to learn why you should consider upgrading.

How do LED downlights work?

LED downlights provide bright, focused light that shines onto the ceiling, similar to headlights. The light fixture can add a stylish finishing touch to any space, and because it is embedded in the ceiling surface, it is much less intrusive than a traditional spotlight.

After installation, the only visible parts of the downlight are its cylindrical frame and bulb glass. Coordinating light with space decor is simple, as many recessed lights allow you to choose edge styles, from polished metal and brass to black or white porcelain.

LED tube lamps have all the advantages of LED lighting, including extended service life, improved energy efficiency, and in some cases the ability to adjust the tone or color temperature of warm white, white, cold white and sunny colors.

You can choose IP65 rated ceiling lights for use in the kitchen or bathroom, as LED ceiling lights are available in a variety of IP levels. You can also install a fireproof downlight, which has an expansion pad that, when heated to a certain point, rapidly expands to close the cut where the downlight is located. By limiting the ability of the fire to easily enter the attic, it helps to curb the spread of the fire. Fire tested downlights can withstand 30, 60 or 90 minutes.

How do I use the downlights?

When using LED downlights as a general purpose fixture, make sure to place enough LED downlights in the room so that the space is properly lit. Once this is done, choosing the number of downlights to place will depend on your personal taste.

Installing one LED downlight per square meter is the general rule. You should also leave one meter of space between each light and each wall. Therefore, in the space of 3m x 3m, nine downlights are the best choice to achieve bright and uniform diffusion of light.

However, due to the brightness output and radiation direction of the LED downlight, there is a certain degree of freedom. You can place fewer downlights because downlights with larger beam angles provide a wider distribution of light.

Similarly, a lamp with a higher brightness level is more vibrant and can illuminate a space more efficiently. Dimmable LED downlights can give you even more options, as they can either provide pleasant, bright light or dim to provide softer light when necessary.
